The Embassy Building, completed July 4, 1961, Priority was given to the use of local materials. All the marble, cement, tile and plastering materials are Greek products. Most of the fabricated materials came from Western Europe.

It was imported from the United Allowalat materials

oseph took over a unit of three different sized floors,

totalling 800 sq.m. The existing geometry was unworkable and incoherent

, with limited shopfront in relation to the shop’s size.

Also the existing spiral staircase was located

in a position which neither assisted circulation nor complied with building regulations.

Re-locating the stair to the centre of the ground floor was a device to ease circulation,

free up previously constrained floor space,

and act as a sculptural focus as well as creating a clear

orientation link between all levels. A limited palette of materials was

selected for the finishes, to achieve a neutral background

against which the merchandise would shine.

 Metabolism Architecture:

When: 1960 – 1970s

Where: The urban design philosophy and ideas of metabolism were presented at the 1960 World Design Conference in Tokyo.

The origins of the movement date back to 1946, post World War II Japan, when Kenzo Tange established the Tange Research Laboratory at Tokyo University. Urban reconstruction of Japanese cities destroyed during WWII was the problem to be solved. Tange's Japanese students challenged the Western ideas of static urban planning.

Who: Fumihiko Maki, Masato Otaka, Kiyonari Kikutake, and Kisho Kurokawa. Other students and associates of Kenzo Tange, such as Arata Isozaki, are also associated with the movement.

Characteristics: organic urban design and reconstruction, recycling, organic growth and change, prefabrication, expansion and contraction based on need, megastructure infrastructure (core), attachable / detachable substructure, replaceable units (cells or pods), sustainability

Water Template :

Few of Tadao Ando’s projects represent the architect’s contribution to Japanese culture better than his Water Temple: more than a building,

it is a sensorial experience representing a radical change in the age-old tradition of Japanese temple architecture.

Ando employs a series of different architectonic spaces conceived as a succession of theatres for initiation.

Walking between the lotus flowers, one feels that this is a place which transcends day-to-day life, a place where the combination of architecture with nature and the reverberation of the placid mirror of water naturally lead to meditation and asceticism.

After descending the narrow staircase flanked by the cement walls so typical of Ando’s works, the visitor finally reaches the sacred space, where everything is enveloped in a warm vermilion red – an unusual use of colour by the architect.

Access to the sanctuary is not immediate: once again, basic geometrical elements oblige the visitor to take a route which only gradually leads to the place of worship,

ان تقدم الحضارة والعلم في المدينة

يدين للشعور بالجمال

بقدر ما استحمل العدل والحرية
